[CALIBK12] Teaching Info Lit to Teacher Credential Students

Hello Alison,

I am the teacher librarian in a 9-12 high school library. Here are my initial suggestions:

1. One of the most important things for teachers to realize is that becoming information literate is an ongoing process which cannot be achieved in a one-shot assignment. The process needs to be reinforced often (at least every year) with Inquiry-based assignments. All too often, the tendency is to think that students are getting it from another teacher, i.e., English. Every curriculum has research in its standards, but many teachers regard this as the Big Research assignment for which they just don't have enough time. It doesn't have to be the big semester-type research assignment. Smaller projects are very supportive in breaking the "process" down into smaller increments. Instead of assigning/discussing a particular chapter or element in the curriculum, that information could be obtained by "researching" that material in the library. Students cannot get too much of library experience! They need to go often in order to become effective users.

2. Collaborate with the librarian.

Hello Calibbers,

I have a colleague at another institution who is teaching K-12 teacher credential students. He would like to add in an information literacy component. What do you think are the most important items he should teach them regarding information literacy in his class?

Thank you for all of your help and keep up the great work!
