[CALIBK12] Boston Tea Party

Am I missing something? The professor was pointing out false and offending
images of Native Americans and showing how pervasive offensive stereotypes
continue, from some of Tuesday's protests (feathers and headdresses,
"Paleface taxes no good. Let little brave keep wampum.") to continued
inaccurate depictions in children's literature (The Boston Tea Party,
published in 2001, written by Pamela Duncan Edwards, illustrations by Henry
Cole). She merely pointed out the John Stewart piece because he showed these
images in his video clips. This isn't politics: it's to encourage media
literacy and historical accuracy. I'm happy when these failures are brought
to light. I pulled Angel Girl from my shelves after its story was proven to
be fiction when the author claimed it as historical fact.

This is not the place to put your politics. At times I feel people look
for things with which to be offended-politically, religiously,
ethnically, or racially (plus any other -lys you want to add). There
were Tea Party events near me also. There were many people in attendance
at one here in California (4,500). It was peaceful, nonpartisan (no
politicians were invited to speak), and expressed a viewpoint that is
often ignored by the media. There is a disenfranchisement going on as
taxation, spending, and more go beyond what is reasonable. There is a
great deal of media bias. Generally speaking there is an inbalance of
reporting. Too often it is much commentary with selective facts shared.
I often see and hear this as I listen to lessons taught in the library
by staff. This is a reason we stress freedom to read, freedom of
information, and work to have a balanced collection that brings in the
many voices on the numerous explorations of controversy or topic.
Critical thinking cannot take place without all sides being well
represented or it simply becomes brainwashing or indoctrination.

  Good morning,

In light of yesterday's Tea Party events, I uploaded a couple of
images of the way the Boston Tea Party is depicted.

At one of the Tea Party gatherings of yesterday, a protester wore an
Indian headdress.

Useful for critical media lessons, here's the page with the images:
