[CALIBK12] Outsourcing K-6 libraries

Right on, Richard. But, Jeanne, is this the same company that works
with public libraries? I'm going to be even more appalled if there are
outfits springing up specifically for school libraries. I shudder to
think what kind of bare bones model could be sold to some administrators
that have never seen a decent school library program. This will just
perpetuate the idea that "anyone can do it". Yikes!
Sincerely,
Maggie Barnes

Jeanne,
Outsourcing (http://www.lssi.com/) is how cowards -- cities, counties
and school districts -- get around unions. They take over and the
employees wind up applying for their own jobs. They have been more
successful in public libraries than in schools because school unions are
stronger -- and thus better at protecting the public interest.
Because their motivation is money, they have no real interest in the
individuals in the community they serve. How well do you think privacy
and independent thinking will do in a shopped-out library? What would
be the point of getting more customers if you already are making a
profit and you know the budget has a limit?
In our world, our motivation is the good that we can do. In theirs, it
is the money they can save by cutting corners.

Subject: [CALIBK12] Oursourcing K-6 libraries
Hello, Calib folks,
I had heard of oursourcing transportation and maintenace, and seen this
implemented in districts I'd worked for elsewhere, but it had never
occurred
to me that elementary libraries could be outsourced. I know that there
is a
for-profit company that manages public library systems, but still hadn't
thought this model could be applied to school libraries.
Well, apparently it can. My superintendent got a letter from a company
that
promises to fully automate K-6 libraries. This company promises to
handle
classroom visits, shelve books, repair and clean books, maintain
students
library records, and maintain the library environment, promising a cost
savings to the district.
I was flabbergasted. Is this being proposed in other areas?
