Thank you to Shirley for reminding me that Hans spelled his last name
"Andersen" not "son." I didn't have the book in front of me, and misspelled
it.
Corrected below - my apologies to Hans, et al!
If you bought the newspaper this weekend, you may have received the Parade
magazine. There is an article with photos in it about Denmark's Crown Prince
and his bride. This was perfect timing for me! For the past several years at
this time of the year I've shared the story of "The Princess and the Pea"
with my students, by Hans Christian Andersen. First I tell them we're
traveling to Denmark, which I show them on a flat map of Europe. Next I show
them a book (we just look at the cover) about his life and I introduce the
concept of the biography book. Then I have them look at the paper cutting of
the blue lady on the front - they guess that it is a mermaid (did you know
he was also famous for his intricate paper cuttings, which he often did as
he told a story?). I talk about the fact that he wrote the original story
that Disney studio turned into "The Little Mermaid" film. I show them an
encyclopedia picture of Copenhagen and the Little Mermaid statue. I read the
original version of Princess and the Pea to them last week (no pictures,
with their eyes closed to practice imagining it), and talked about Andersen
- whose stories have been translated into practically every language (if you
don't believe me, check out his museum in Denmark! I did!). This week, I am
going to read Janet Steven's version, which casts the characters as animals
- and introduce the term "Retold By." And this year I will have the article
about the REAL prince of Denmark who married a lovely lady from Australia -
a commoner! I wonder if the Queen Mother had her sleep on top of all those
mattresses to check her credentials out?! ;-)
And this week (because I forgot to last week!) I will show them the photo of
the statue of the Little Mermaid, with Mrs. Ladewig standing along side her!
(Yes, I really was there!).
