[CALIBK12] Textbooks/Library Fines and Collecting of Monies

I am still just a neophyte, I am learning and experimenting. I have appreciated the discussion. So far I am seeing a big increase in the library usage at my school from both students and staff. I tease, listen, and share with both the kids and staff alike. When I see kids with a fine, I find out more about them as we talk. I have forgiven a few fines. I generally make "a deal" that seems to put me on the kids good side. I may say something like, "hey, come and see me when you are going to pay the debt in the finance office and I will cut it in half (or more) for you. (I am getting to know my kids pretty well. I work hard at learning every name I can.) The money is coming in. Once in a while I take the money and put it in a jar to turn in later and they can see the fine disappear from my screen. I have had nothing but kids responding positively. I sometimes tease about I may need to call in a favor at times when I am in a bind. I do call in a favor such as ..."hey can you help me get it a bit quieter in here today? I can use the help." (It was usually their table with excessive exuberance.) Sometimes I can ask them to help another student when I am swamped. A number of times my deal includes me saying that I expect to see them reading more of my books so I can have more job security. We laugh and keep on going. I also go to some of the activities (not just adjunct duties) so they know me outside of the library. I love my job and my kids.
