[CALIBK12] Work and Payment Contracts

Heather,

If library books or other library materials are lost and the family
cannot pay for them, I take the total fine and divide it by 10 (saying
a minimum wage job will be $10/hour) to find out the number of hours
the student must work to pay off the fine. I divide the number of
hours by 4 because I ask the student to work off the fine in 15 minute
increments during our 30 minute lunch break. I draw up a chart with
the number of boxes of 15 minute increments and sign off every time
the student works.

A 6th grader just finished her 10 visits to pay off an audio player
she lost. She is quite bright, so we were able to teach her to shelf
books. Others not so capable can always straighten shelves or clean -
our busy library spends lots of time with the door open and dust
blowing in. If I have a behavior problem, I involve a counselor. It
has worked very well. If other students want to know why the student
is in the library, I just say, "he/she volunteered to help me out for
awhile, isn't that great? I really appreciate it!"
