Judie,
I use colored label protectors to designate genres. In addition to genre labels, I also have bookmarks for genres. The bookmarks are great for when I'm busy or when my brain is tired and I need more ideas. The kids can also become self-help if they wish to. The idea came from Heather Gruenthal and Tommy Kovac at the CSLA conference in 2007. Heather's wiki is at http://riyl.wikispaces.com/ and has lots of great ideas. They have lots of bookmarks and booklists that you can adapt. You can even use Tommy's artwork, just not her students. I have made up a Books on Gangs bookmark which is widely popular at my school. Child abuse comes under the What's Your Problem? bookmark. And now that you mention it, I need a Tearjerker bookmark.

I have done this at my high school and they are appreciated by teachers who bring their classes in for free reading books as well as by the students. I can't always be there for all of the students when they come in as a class, so they like knowing that romance books have a heart, scary stories have a ghost, etc. I just wish there were labels for tearjerkers, child abuse, and gang stories. That's what I seem to spend my time searching for students. I use Highsmith because they had the best selection when I started doing this about 10 years ago. And I put up a chart with all the labels I use and what they stand for.

Subject: [CALIBK12] genre labels
We are considering putting genre labels on our fiction books (at a high school). Do other high schools do this? What company's labels do you use? Demco?
