[CALIBK12] Middle School Literature Choice

It may be a bit heavy for sixth graders, but Thirteen Reason Why by Jay
Asher would provide plenty for the class to discuss. My Books Club
(ranging 9-12) spent one and a half hours talking about it and would
have spent longer if concerned rides and parents had not started
calling. Have the teacher preview it first to see what (s)he thinks
about using it since the sixth graders would have to be pretty mature.

Hello Collective Brain.

I have a teacher who is teaching a Life Skills class to sixth graders,
all reading at or above grade level, who wanted to use Twilight to
discuss self-esteem and relationships in class. Obviously there is a
lot of flack about that, so we are wondering if anyone can recommend a
book which would be appropriate and appeal to sixth grade boys as well
which handles these topics. Any ideas?

TIA,

Janie
