Great news, Jackie.

CSLA was also represented at the ALA booth at the American Association of
School Administrators in San Francisco last week. Although the emphasis was
on AASL materials the local folks in the booth were CSLA-ers.

Speaking of advocacy, the new AASL Advocacy Toolkit <

is a great place to start looking for @ your library(R) materials for school
libraries.

Hi, Connie.
I use Trumba <http://www.trumba.com <http://www.trumba.com/> > which costs $95 per year but allows me
to post my calendar as a banner on my home page.
Teachers (and others) can check to see who's using the library but they
still have to sign up with me or my assistant. We also have paper calendar
which we find useful because you can see it without having to be online. It
also provides a double check if there are questions. Items go on the paper
calendar first and then are entered into Trumba. I can also add lots of
things to Trumba which aren't on the paper calendar.
I use Google calendar personally but it doesn't seem as accessible as the
Trumba calendar is... or I don't know how to make it so!

I don't know more about this effort than what I could read on their website. Readers are Winners, Inc.  is a non-profit. The concept of offering reading fun during the summer is good. I do wonder how many grade-appropriate students have access to the internet at home. Barbara

In an attempt to help 1st-3rd grade students offset summer reading loss/setback and show up next year ready to read, we have created a new FREE 6-week summer reading event called Letter P.A.L.S. Summerfest 2009.  You can learn more about Letter P.A.L.S. Summerfest 2009 at www.letterpals.org<http://www.letterpals.org/>.  Teachers can start signing up their classrooms now.  Letter P.A.L.S. Summerfest 2009 will start on June 22.

This year's Letter P.A.L.S. Summerfest reading event will run from June 22 to August 2 and will consist of a set of 24 online Pet Shop Pen Pals weekly letters, which are delivered one at a time, every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at the Letterpals web site. Each daily letter is personalized with the child's name, is 3 pages in length, professionally written, beautifully illustrated, and reviewed by reading specialists for use in a shared/guided reading environment.  To see what a sample letter looks like, click on the computer on the home page. There is also an additional special feature page, called "Paws for Reading." It follows the third page of the letter and includes specific questions and answers for each letter. It is intended to bring the most meaning to each letter.  We have also highlighted 8 key words in red within each letter that will be used in a daily crossword puzzle and word search.  We feel the 8 key words help round out the reading experience b!
 y providing some basic vocabulary and spelling practice.  Any student who completes all of the letters, crossword puzzles, and word searches will receive a prize.

To date, schools in 42 states have participated in our school year Letter P.A.L.S. program to great reviews.  It was based on their feedback that we are now offering a summer event to help them deliver students to the next grade at the reading level they worked so hard to develop.  In fact, Letter P.A.L.S. 2010 will include programs for grades K-6.  Please email me back if you have any questions. I just started using Google calendar this week!   It is embedded on my 
Destiny page, and is really easy to update. It is very basic. I  only 
have two weeks out right now, but for most of the staff that is 
fine...we are still a small school (only 375 students).   As we grow, 
I will have to offer more I am sure, and may look at another product.

I use the outlook calendar also. I created it as a shared calendar that all can access from school or home if using the home district email access. I do it much the same for scheduling the classes. The part I like the most is that I can write information about each activity and add or change details as plans evolve. I need my electronic memory to keep things going being as eclectic as I am. All can see the details by double clicking on the listed activity. You can also calendar repeated activities simply.

I signed up with a company named pedesigns and our staff really likes it. You can have up to 6 facilities to schedule. Here are features that I like:
--Staff can reserve space up to 3 weeks in advance (a feature you can control).
--It send the person a reminder email the day before.
--Staff cannot delete or change reservations, I do that
--It works well with Safari and Explorer and has only a small glitch with firefox
--Tim, the guy in charge, emails back quickly when designing each school's calendar/program or if you have questions
--Teachers don't need to log in, they just have a secret word to make reservations

The only downside is that it costs. $200/year. But for us, it is well worth it.

Our District Superintendent told a Board of Education member that " He reminded me that the State will not allow us to hold graduation certificates, graduation, or the like from students who owe
fines."  "Fines" are for books owed that have not been returned, for which we do have reasonable assurance we will get back, because they are currently enrolled in our school district.

Please help me with the ed code that would support his statement or would support the library and textbook staff thought process - that debts can be used to withhold these items.

In the district's zeal to eliminate all debts, yesterday a district level employee deleted almost $2000 in debts for my site only, for current adoption books for students currently enrolled in a school in our district.  What will happen today, who knows?

California Education Code:

48904.  (a) (1) Notwithstanding Section 1714.1 of the Civil Code,
the parent or guardian of any minor whose willful misconduct results
in injury or death to any pupil or any person employed by, or
performing volunteer services for, a school district or private
school or who willfully cuts, defaces, or otherwise injures in any
way any property, real or personal, belonging to a school district or
private school, or personal property of any school employee, shall
be liable for all damages so caused by the minor.  The liability of
the parent or guardian shall not exceed ten thousand dollars
($10,000).  The parent or guardian shall also be liable for the
amount of any reward not exceeding ten thousand dollars ($10,000)
paid pursuant to Section 53069.5 of the Government Code.  The parent
or guardian of a minor shall be liable to a school district or
private school for all property belonging to the school district or
private school loaned to the minor and not returned upon demand of an
employee of the district or private school authorized to make the
demand.
   (2) The Superintendent of Public Instruction shall compute an
adjustment of the liability limits prescribed by this subdivision at
a rate equivalent to the percentage change in the Implicit Price
Deflator for State and Local Government Purchases of Goods and
Services for the United States, as published by the United States
Department of Commerce for the 12-month period ending in the third
quarter of the prior fiscal year.
   (b) (1) Any school district or private school whose real or
personal property has been willfully cut, defaced, or otherwise
injured, or whose property is loaned to a pupil and willfully not
returned upon demand of an employee of the district or private school
authorized to make the demand may, after affording the pupil his or
her due process rights, withhold the grades, diploma, and transcripts
of the pupil responsible for the damage until the pupil or the pupil'
s parent or guardian has paid for the damages thereto, as provided in
subdivision (a).
   (2) The school district or private school shall notify the parent
or guardian of the pupil in writing of the pupil's alleged misconduct
before withholding the pupil's grades, diploma, or transcripts
pursuant to this subdivision.  When the minor and parent are unable
to pay for the damages, or to return the property, the school
district or private school shall provide a program of voluntary work
for the minor in lieu of the payment of monetary damages.  Upon
completion of the voluntary work, the grades, diploma, and
transcripts of the pupil shall be released.
   (3) The governing board of each school district or governing body
of each private school shall establish rules and regulations
governing procedures for the implementation of this subdivision.  The
procedures shall conform to, but are not necessarily limited to,
those procedures established in this code for the expulsion of
pupils.

48904.3.  (a) Upon receiving notice that a school district has
withheld the grades, diploma, or transcripts of any pupil pursuant to
Section 48904, any school district to which the pupil has
transferred shall likewise withhold the grades, diploma, or
transcripts of the pupil as authorized by that section, until the
time that it receives notice, from the district that initiated the
decision to withhold, that the decision has been rescinded under the
terms of that section.
   (b) Any school district that has decided to withhold a pupil's
grades, diploma, or transcripts pursuant to Section 48904 shall, upon
receiving notice that the pupil has transferred to any school
district in this state, notify the parent or guardian of the pupil in
writing that the decision to withhold will be enforced as specified
in subdivision (a).
   (c) For purposes of this section and Section 48904, "school
district" is defined to include any county superintendent of schools.

   (d) This section and Section 48904 shall also apply to the state
special schools, as described in subdivision (a) of Section 48927.
