[CALIBK12] Reading to Children

We have an organization here in Tulare County called Read for Life
www.readforlife.org. We give books to the parents of new babies and
reach out to talk to them about the importance of reading aloud. We are
100% supported by donations, and 100% volunteer run. One of our
programs reaches out to the TAPP program, where it is a joy to see these
young women really taking an interest in their child's school success.
When we tell them that reading aloud to their babies will increase the
child's success in school, they can't wait to do it - and some have
learned to read themselves through reading to their children. The TAPP
teachers see the success of this and support it completely, with real
lessons and ongoing support for reading aloud. Each parent winds up with
the seeds of a children's library in the form of a dozen or so books
that they use constantly.
If anyone wants details about the program, you can contact me and I will
send you some of the things we hand out.

Sarah,

I think that it would be fun to read different types of books to the
group.
Like Blanche, I would suggest short picture books. Some of my favorites
are:

Baby Brains (the world's smartest baby...very amusing) Little Pea (about
eating your veggies...or not; it is short & funny) The Night I Followed
the Dog (wonder what your dog does when you're gone?)
My Monster Mama Loves Me So (unconditional mother love ...great art)
I Love You Like Crazy Cakes (single parent adoption story; lovely art)
Bubba the Cowboy Prince (fractured Cinder-fella, fairy tale story)
Princess Pigsty (one of Cornelia Funke's funny picture books) Dr. White
(a dog story about pet-assisted therapy by Jane Goodall) Rickie and
Henri (also by Jane Goodall - based on a true story about a chimp
  and a dog)
Animals Nobody Loves (this Seymour Simon book seems to catch kids'
interest
-- it is a factual book with beautiful photos of scary or ugly
animals)
A Job For Wittilda (by Buehner, Caralyn & Mark -- jobless witch cares
for cats -- very funny & great illustrations)

I, too, like the idea of selecting volunteers from the group to read to
the group. You wouldn't have to cover all the books that you set
out...just get to as many as the time allowed after your introduction.
Then allow a wee bit of time for them to say whether they enjoyed it.
It is always fun to be read to.
