We also encourage students to save as an RTF but for those who fail to do so, we have the following converter loaded on our lab computers. It's a free download from Microsoft:

We have our students save the documents in rich text format to make sure any program can be read on any computer.

Below are instructions that my libraries set out for all of the students
which tell them how ( ahead of time ) to save their files so that they
can be opened on the schools' computers in our version of MS WORD. [I
hope you can see the JPEG below.] For word processing programs other
than different versions of MS WORD, the directions instruct the students
to save their files as .txt so you may want to modify them if you prefer
.rft formats.
These instructions are a 3 column WORD document that you print it in
Landscape and cut to get 3 bookmarks per page. I'll be glad to send
the file to anyone who emails a request.
P.S. All of our Freshman English classes hand these out too, so it
alleviates some ( but not all ) screams....
