The year before I came here they charged fines. Students didn't come to the library and didn't check out books. We now have a packed library and check out hundreds of books every month. The school policy is that students have to return everything before they check out and go to another school. Our registrar will not forward transcripts if they have not returned library books or paid for them. Students can not walk at graduation until all books are returned and fees paid, so eventually things are either returned or paid for. We do not check out books to students with overdue books and that seems to work pretty well. We have started to use the phone messenger to call the students at home who have overdue items. That also seems to be working. We lose a few books here and there but, not very many. My number one priority is to get books into the students hands and create a friendly, helpful, encouraging place to hang out. This is a life lesson. If I don't pay my credit card bill, I get hit with a late fee as well as a finance charge. If I miss payments on my car, it will be repossessed. It is our job to help our students become responsible adults. Or perhaps there is something about the state of the economy today that I've missed. Paying fines on library books or paying for lost books is but a small step on that road to adulthood.> > Thanks for letting me vent!> > Fran Zimmermann> District Library Media Teacher> Burbank Unified School District> 818-558-4700 x52940> > _______________________________________________> CALIBK12 site list> CALIBK12 at lists.sjsu.edu> http://lists.sjsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/calibk12> > For information about the Calibk12 listserve, please> visit http://www.calibk12.net.> > _______________________________________________> CALIBK12 site list> CALIBK12 at lists.sjsu.edu> http://lists.sjsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/calibk12> > For information about the Calibk12 listserve, please> visit http://www.calibk12.net.
