Cross-posted to CALIB and LM_NET:
I'm sad to report that another popular kids' magazine has been discontinued:
Kid Zone (a Canadian publication) has ceased printing*. I wish I had
subscribed earlier (wasn't sure if it was right for California kids). My
students loved it once they discovered it in our rack - at least I'd have a
few more copies to hang on to if I'd started earlier. It joins the list of
several others such as Moto Kids and Young Dancer that ceased publication
within the past few years - both very popular at my school. I'm keeping my
fingers crossed for other newbies such as Zootles, Dig, and Girls Discover.
Highlights also has a new "junior" version called "High Five" - though it's
for quite young children (preschool - 1st) it appeals and is enjoyed by our
limited-English learners here.
Most of us will be facing budget restrictions and may consider dropping
magazines, but I would urge you to at least try to get alternate funding
(PTA, etc.) before you give up completely - otherwise, those publications
probably will not be around in several years when the budget picture looks a
bit rosier.
