I don't know if The Watsons Go to Birmingham would fit the bill..............it's from Michigan to Alabama.

I love “Oliver Woodman” – I read it to my second graders in the lesson when I introduce atlases.
For a chapter book, I recommend “Henry Reed’s Journey,” by Keith Robertson (Viking, 1963). As I recall, Henry and his friend Midge are traveling across country in a station wagon with her parents, from the west coast, I think, to New Jersey. The story more or less ends when they are about halfway (“We made it to New Jersey with no further adventures” kind of summary). I have not read (re-read) it in several years, but I don’t recall that it’s hopelessly dated.

I have a Fifth Grade teacher who is looking for a novel to read with her class would fit into a unit related to a "road trip" across the United States.
I have a great picture book to introduce the class to the unit, The Journey of Oliver Woodman. I need a chapter book with a similar theme.
