[CALIBK12] 8th grade short stories

A friend has just been given the opportunity to do a 2 week program this summer with 8th grade English Language learners (poetry and other writings) and has asked me to suggest some poets and short stories that she could use as a spring board for the students' own writing. I work with high school and would love some suggestions.
I have thought about House on Mango Street and Gary Soto poetry/books. Is Walter Dean Myers to advanced? I'd love any input from the group. Thank you!
