[CALIBK12] General introduction to school libraries - Humor! - and now off topic :) (fwd)

Or why/how I got an A in cataloging. Because I was a good typist, I was able to
produce catalog cards with no typing errors and my typing grade reflected my
typing skills rather than my cataloging knowledge since any errors I might have
made creating the first set were dutifully corrected and returned to me
for retyping and that coveted "A" with absolutely no skills or desire to
ever catalog anything. Sometimes I think the first criteria I had for the
purchase of a book for the library was if it had H.W. Wilson card sets
available for purchase.

If it is possible to go down memory lane just a little longer, when I
became coordinator of school libraries for my school district in the
mid-sixties, the role was to establish elementary libraries as quickly as
possible. I ordered a huge number of H.W. Wilson card "stamps" which was
how you ordered and paid for their card sets then and definitely before
Follett or Baker and Taylor sent electronic records to your OPAC. The the
tiny box arrived with some thousands of these tiny stamps with a purchase
price then of many dollars, the postman brought it to my office to sign
for insured delivery. Looking around the stacks of books being cataloged,
he asked, "What in this tiny light-weight box costs that much money?"
