I'd guess in 1960-63 they WERE very busy "Behind the Scenes at the
Library." Busy typing and filing cards in the card catalog, explaining the
wonders of the Periodical Literature indexes, printing out (by hand) the titles
and publishers of recent acquisitions in the ledgers, loading the Kodak
Carousels with slide shows, teaching patrons how to use the cutting-edge technology
of microfiche, putting out new books on display like "Someday We'll Have a
Man on the Moon" - all very helpful stuff to know nowadays . . .
You couldn't find anything more current

(Heck, if only I'd saved that moon book20–
it would really be worth something on eBay!)

Librarians in Children's Literature,

Abstract: The presentations of librarians in thirty-five
children's books published between 1909 and 2000 in the United States
were described, compared, and analyzed to discover indications of attitudes and
beliefs about librarians and to disc
ern evidence of changing roles within the
profession of librarianship. In regard to gender and ethnicity, most of the
librarians depicted are female and Caucasian, including those in books from
recent decades.
Consistency in work tasks of librarians is seen throughout
the century, but the tools used to perform the work show consistent evolution. Librarians emerge as caring, friendly, and energetic
professionals who have positive interactions and relationships with patrons.

I have been asked for a book
recommendation by someone who wants a good, general introduction to all
the pieces of our job. Is there one book that includes all of the essential
pieces (circulation, reference, cataloging, etc.)?

In looking through my own library, I have many good books,
but they tend to be only
on reference, only
on cataloging, etc.
