[CALIBK12] K-8 school & Twilight

I also work at a K-8 school. I opted not to purchase Twilight because I didn't think the last book in the series was appropriate for our age group. We use Accelerated Reader so a student decided to "adopt" the test for Twilight. The student gave me $3 and I ordered the test from Renaissance Learning. The test is then available to anyone who wants has read the book. I figure that if the kids are reading it anyway, their parents are aware of it since the books did not come from the school. Also, I have not spent school funds on an AR test for a book we don't have.

I also have a "Teen" section that is for 7th and 8th graders only. They are labeled with a "Teen" sticker on the spine and I do allow younger students to check out these books with parent permission. I accept a note from the parent that states that they are aware of the mature content of some of the titles. It's worked well so far but I have only been in this job for two years...

P.S. I am not a credentialed Teacher/Librarian but reading all the comments from the rest of you is encouraging me to become one!

That is what I did, and I put a color dot on them, as a reminder to me.

I also work at a K-8 school. This is what we have done to remedy the "Twilight" issue as well as other Young Teen novels. We have a designated area that is reserved for our middle school students only. (6-8th grade). We let our students that don't fall under that category know that they are welcome to check out the same book at the public library. We don't allow permission slips. PERIOD. The target audience for our books in this section are Upper grade / Young Adult. If our school had a separate library for middle school - these lower grade students wouldn't even see these titles.

Anyone else have ideas?
