Tom and Jeanne,
First, Jeanne, thanks for the book recommendation!  Sounds like we all should buy or borrow a copy and read it.

Second, Tom, thanks for sharing your fantastic recognition by students!  Hope you don't mind that I sent the news story idea to SF Chronicle education reporter Nanette Asimov and a few others.  I will post about your recognition in my blog and hope other CSLA members will share the story with their local library advocates, students, site councils, and administrators.  We may not like to brag about ourselves, but we certainly can brag about our colleagues and their smart students!

Best wishes.

Great idea, Jeanne. Bragging is hard for me as well.
Speaking of bragging, I have to share with everyone the fact that the library at Redwood High School was named one of the "Seven Wonders of Redwood" by the school's yearbook staff this year.

Click on the link to my library news blog below to see my posting about the honor.

Read, every day, something no one else is reading. Think, every day, something no one else is thinking. Do, every day, something no one else would be silly enough to do. It is bad for the mind to be always part of unanimity.

Hello, Calibbers,

You may not be like me, but I hate to "sell" myself and my library program--
it goes against  how I was brought up, to not brag about myself, and let my actions and results speak for themselves.  Well, anymore, actions and deeds aren't enough-- we need to be our own advocates, and yet this is not easy for many of us.

I just finished reading Brag, by Peggy Klaus, and it really resonated with me.  The author describes how to promote yourself and your program/product/company in a positive and effective way, through numerous channels, and with people who may seem unsupportive.

So many times I've heard library personnel say, "they don't know what we do here in the library."  Well, if they don't know, we aren't telling them, or we aren't telling them effectively, and this book provides excellent strategies for doing just that-- without being preachy.

Some people are very good at promoting causes they believe in, but for

anyone who needs some quick strategies to help along the way, this book may

be the perfect solution.  I really recommend that you get a copy to read

over the summer, and go back in the fall better prepared to promote your

value to the school community and the importance of your program for

students.
