[CALIBK12] Staffing cuts and CSLA

Hi all,

Since districts are now looking at firing teacher librarians and library technicians, I encourage you to make sure to let your CSLA regional representatives know, so that they can provide support.

Last year, as a NS region 3 rep, I wrote letters, went to a couple of board meetings, and attempted to provide behind-the-scenes support. This is in no way unusual. We have strength in numbers and it really helps to fill the board room with people who are your supporters (even if not from your district).

One important note: If we don't know about it until it is announced here the day of the board meeting, it is hard to help.

Historical note: Four years ago all 24 teacher librarians in Fresno Unified were fired. A year later they got their jobs back. That superintendent is now gone. One of the main reasons that jobs were restored was because it played out so poorly in the press. The other reason was that they also fired music teachers (which also played out poorly in the press). The more light you can put on the situation, the better your possibility for success.
