Katie (and others),

I am sorry to hear of the cuts to TLs and library services in your district.

However, if the parcel tax or something else doesn't change the situation, I hope you are right about "...middle and high school libraries being closed 2.5 days per week." Very often, it seems that administrators find ways to adjust schedules or use other employees to have the library "open" for some part of each day.

You (and/or your colleagues) should resist any attempts to have the remaining TLs work half a day at each site M-F in the name of "having the library open every day." Nothing communicates the funding priorities of your district to students, colleagues, and the community like a big sign on the door that reads "Sorry, we are closed every Wednesday afternoon, Thursday, and Friday."

Dr. Krashen,
The San Ramon Valley Unified School District board voted to cut
secondary library media teachers to 50% tonight. This amounts to
$510,000.00--6 FTE. This will result in our middle and high school
libraries being closed 2.5 days per week. It means that one LMT will
be responsible for 2 schools, with no clerical help. Bottom
line...less access to library resources, and half the instruction.
