[CALIBK12] Library cuts and conference

What that board member said is true. It was in my school district as well. The LMT's were consistently being sacrificed to save class size and teaching positions and pay raises. Some of us became building reps and constantly reminded union officers that they represent all the certificated staff -- counselors and LMTs and psychologists -- and not just classroom teachers. And we worked to support classroom teacher issues as well counselors and psychologists and home school teachers, etc. So it was gratifying last night when the union executive board told the school board that they did not want library staff cut, and the audience of teachers applauded that statement.
YEAH! VICTORY!

Want to hear something even worse? I was talking to a board member (of another district) and she said the board use to push all the time for librarians, but the teachers were the biggest complainers about funding them. It’s that parochial thinking that keeps teacher librarians out of the loop.

Sorry, I know it's an "S" word and usually think of "support" instead of "services". Thanks, Barbara. Wouldn't it be nice if we could create another credential "TS"? One of my personal campaigns is to convince our teacher training personnel that they need to emphasize collaboration with the librarian when they work with their new teachers. Why were we required to take at least one class in the Education department to get our Librarian Credential, as well as already possessing the Teaching credential before we were accepted in library school; and yet teachers don't have to do anything in the school of Library Science? In fact, I have had many teachers tell me they didn't even use the library at all when they were working on their credentials. Hmmmmmm!

In response to one of Hit's questions, i.e. "how to make

the teacher librarian credential a teaching credential." The teacher

librarian credential is in the pupil services category of credentials. This

category reflects that we work across a whole school rather than in one classroom.

To obtain a teacher librarian credential, one must hold a teaching credential. http://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/CREDS/library-media.html

This isn't always clear to others. The key is demonstrating that we are teachers

plus to others. Barbara

How do we get teacher librarian positions written into ed code, or

wherever it's written in other states, so that the districts can reduce but not

eliminate???? Ours is still a support credential, not a teaching credential.

who changes that and how???

Dear CALIBers,

I continue to read CALIB postings since moving to Corvallis, Oregon

last October. Pink slips for teacher librarians in March seem to be

as predictable as flu season - and about as pleasant. The Toolbox

on

the CSLA website is there for you to use and support from

colleagues

is important for strategies and boosting morale.

May I suggest that there be a concurrent strand at the conference

about preventive medicine for this pink slip disease? Better yet,

perhaps an entire day membership meeting devoted to this problem.

Are

the sections having meetings that address this? Perhaps each

teacher

librarian and library tech might bring a board member to a

membership

meeting. It just seems that this happens year after year after

year

and library people are put in a reactive mode. Advocacy is everyday

-

not just when cuts are being made.

I admire all of you as you push back to keep quality library

services

available for your students.

Best,

Linda Jewett, CSLA past president
