[CALIBK12] Library cuts and conference

I am distressed that the Spring Workshop occurs the same weekend as CTA
State Council. School Librarians need to be active in CTA, run for
office etc. in order to get CTA to give us more support. Because I am
an elected State Council Member, I will not be able to attend the
Spring Workshop, again.

My apologies for not mentioning the terrific Long Beach team in my
earlier posting. They are a fine example of proactive teamwork and they
are a success story. Are they giving a session or workshop in 2009?

It would be interesting to know how many CSLA members would make sure
they got to the conference if more of the Long Beach story or other
strategies were presented in the fall.

Thank you, Marie. I am so glad you found our session helpful. Pam
Oehlman is presenting again for our Southern Section Workshop on March
21st.

The standards are sooo important! Thank goodness CSLA has worked long
and hard towards an adoption. Positive thoughts, everyone!

You are so right, Linda! I'm sick of fighting this fight every year.
It has been very disheartening to see what is happening across our
already educational funding impoverished state.

However, I attended a beautiful session on Advocacy at the CSLA
Conference in November 2008. The women from Long Beach gave an
inspiring and informative presentation on what we can do to be proactive
rather than reactive.

Perhaps the Long Beach women (I'm terrible with names right now), their
fine superintendent and Glen Warren from the OCDE can give this
presentation again for CSLA Conference 2009??? I know I'd attend again.
It was quite a boost!

We at FJUHSD have mplemented a "positive PR" campaign but we don't feel
comfortable continuing in light of these cuts. Should we continue to
put our cause out there or should we be quiet when cuts are on the line?
Are we calling attention to ourselves when we shouldn't be? If anyone
has a response to that I'd love to know.

Thanks,

Marie Slim

Dear CALIBers,

I continue to read CALIB postings since moving to Corvallis, Oregon

last October. Pink slips for teacher librarians in March seem to be

as predictable as flu season - and about as pleasant. The Toolbox on

the CSLA website is there for you to use and support from colleagues

is important for strategies and boosting morale.

May I suggest that there be a concurrent strand at the conference

about preventive medicine for this pink slip disease? Better yet,

perhaps an entire day membership meeting devoted to this problem. Are

the sections having meetings that address this? Perhaps each teacher

librarian and library tech might bring a board member to a membership

meeting. It just seems that this happens year after year after year

and library people are put in a reactive mode. Advocacy is everyday -

not just when cuts are being made.

I admire all of you as you push back to keep quality library services

available for your students.

Best,

Linda Jewett, CSLA past president
