Dear Callibbers,

If you live in the San Joaquin Valley: please read the attached flyer.

There seems to be a growing trend in the San Joaquin Valley to eliminate
school librarians. At a recent Stockton Unified board meeting they
listed the surrounding districts that were eliminating school librarians
(TLs) which gives the district the impetus and evidence that TLs are not
necessary and therefore considered excess staff to be cut. It is a
tsunami effect and I think we need to pull together and find a way to
stop this trend. The dire consequences of not staffing the school
libraries with certified librarians who teach information literacy or
closing school libraries altogether would add to the literacy deficit
that already exists - the very foundation of our democracy is at stake.

The high school librarians in Stockton Unified would like anyone
concerned about this issue to meet on April 2 at 4:00 pm. The attached
flyer has the details of when and where. Please fill out the survey at
this site:

We are creating a database for further contact.

I would also like to take this time to thank Stephen Krashen for writing
a letter to the editor of The Record newspaper. The support is so
necessary and appreciated!

Thank you,

Debra Bohnett
