[CALIBK12] magazine fund-raiser

While this doesn't completely address your lack of funding issue, here is
what I do:
Our PTO gives us a books and materials budget each year. It also conducts a
QSP/Reader's Digest fund raiser in the fall. Each year, I order one-year
subscriptions for the library through the QSP fundraiser. I pay for them out
of pocket and the PTO reimburses me. The PTO also receives 50% back from the
total amount sold by the fundraiser...so, it is actually receiving a
"rebate" on these subscriptions -- effectively obtaining them for 1/2 off.

If you don't have a PTO budget, you can make a special appeal at the time
the QSP fundraiser comes out. Put out a flyer explaining that the library
has no funds for magazine subscriptions, but would be delighted to receive
them as gifts. One family I know of at our school takes the list of
magazines available through QSP to our local public library and invites the
children's librarian to select titles up to $100 in total costs.
