Graphic Novels 101: Building Collections for Kids, Teens, and Adults
Online: April 1 - 30, 2009
$250 ($200 for Simmons GSLIS Alumni)
PDPs: 15
If you're starting a new collection or want to solidify your
understanding of this popular format, this online course will illuminate
the joys and challenges of collecting graphic novels and comics. Over
the month, national graphic novel expert Robin Brenner will start by
covering all of the basics of the format: what defines graphic novels,
the history of comics and graphic novels, who they're written for, and
how to select them for your collection. This course will cover the
specific literacy graphic novels require and give all students a chance
to read and discuss a selection of the common types of graphic novels.
Graphic novels for every age range will be covered, including the
challenges of widely collecting titles for the newer recognized
audiences of children and adults. On top of this basic knowledge,
students will have a chance to read about and discuss programming,
censorship and challenges, and cataloging related to graphic novels.
Every student should finish the month with an understanding of the
format and how to start and/or maintain a collection.
The online format encourages open discussion between students and
teacher in discussing readings from both articles and graphic novels
themselves, and weekly live chat sessions will be available for anyone
who enjoys live discussion. Everyone interested in this course should
have access to a personal computer, and the Internet, and be able to
navigate message boards, particpate in chat sessions, and play mp3
files. This course will focus on a wide range of graphic novels; check
out Isn't Otaku a Kind of Sushi? to zero in on the wild and wonderful
world of Japanese comics, animation, and running comics/manga clubs.

Managing and Growing Youth Services Collections in the Digital Age
Online: April 1 - 30, 2009
$250 ($200 for Simmons GSLIS Alumni)
PDPs: 15
Are you finding the patterns of use of your collections are changing as
children and teens find more information, knowledge, multimedia tools,
and 'traditional' library materials online? Are you looking for new or
additional ways to increase your perceived value, your use, your
circulation, and build your collections in the digital age? Do you want
your institution to reach and actively engage more children and teens
and build a broader sense of community within its locale? If this is
what you are looking to do, this is the course for you.
During this course we will look at Library Youth Collections and examine
physical collections, layouts, and tools, the Digital Natives and their
approach to information-seeking and community, collection development
and management for the digital age, access to collections, marketing of
your collections, community engagement and your collections, interactive
games, game play, the growth of collections, and possible, affordable,
Knowledge extensions to consider at your library and within your
community. Participants will leave with practical, affordable, and
easily implementable ways to manage and enhance their youth collections
to engage and connect with a larger audience.
Faculty: Bonnie Peirce is Head of Children's Services at the Dover Town
Library and was recently profiled in Library Journal's Movers and
Shakers as a 'Web 2.0 guru'. Bonnie is the founder of B3OK, an open
global mobile knowledge network connecting the physical and digital
worlds. She is also co-founder and CTO of thebestkidsbooksite.com , a
growing and unique knowledge brokering service serving child-focused
professionals and families around the world, and founder of the Library
Goddesses Blog Network, a collaborative blog network with companion
wikis to enable librarians across the United States and Canada to share
their knowledge of books and their professional experience with many
different aspects of librarianship. Bonnie is a graduate of GSLIS,
received her business degree from Thunderbird and did her undergraduate
work at Dartmouth College. Bonnie has traveled extensively, is an avid
podcaster, blogger, and advocate for incorporating new media tools and
practices into public library services, and has an abiding interest in
global literacy; wizardhere at gmail.com
