[CALIBK12] Districts with Credentialed TL's

I'm with Barbara on this. My study of California school libraries and student achievement indicates that
the strongest correlations between school library programs and student achievement occur at the high school level; not coincidentally, as a percentage, high schools have 3 1/2 times the number of fully staffed (full time teacher-librarian and full-time paraprofessional) school libraries as do middle schools, and over 25 times that of elementary schools.
On the U.S. History STAR test, the strength of the library program is a better predictor of scores than parent education, poverty, or ethnicity. What this means is that schools which don't invest in their library programs--including staffing--disadvantage their students. I think the need for equity is one of the strongest argumensts we can make for supporting our programs.

It's good to know the staffing patterns in the schools and districts around us but that comparison is not always the most effective argument in California. Instead, I think it's more compelling to state the benefits of strong library programs on teaching and learning. There's also the credentialing aspect noted in the regulations posted on the CSLA Web site under "Budget Crisis." Nice work with the DataQuest search! Barbara

Thank you to all!! Really, what would I do without the wonderful (and quick!) support found on CALIB?!?
I've made notes from the responses I've received, but this information is available through the CDE. Below are links for Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, but other counties are available.
Sincerely,
Stephanie Hall
