I tried just replying to Claudia, but the system administrator sent it
back, so I will reply to everyone in the hopes that she gets this. For
fiction, we look at when the work was acquired, the publication date,
and the number of check outs. If the book was added ten years ago, has
a publication date of 10+ years ago, and has never been checked out, we
pull these. It's not perfect, but it seems to work. For non-fiction,
theoretically, we use the MUSTY method. In reality, since our
collection is dated and we do not have the money to replace those
materials, older materials that should be weeded have to stay or whole
sections would disappear. For anyone unfamiliar with MUSTY, it breaks
down loosely as follows:
M = Misleading, inaccurate information including
* "dated" popular fiction
* obsolete information
* books containing racial, cultural, or sexual stereotyping
U= Ugly physical condition of the book including
* antiquated appearance
* worn-out, frayed, dirty
* unable to mend
S = Superseded materials including
* duplicate copies
* almanacs, yearbooks,
* encyclopedias superseded by updated or online editions
T = Trivial materials including
* appropriateness for the collection
* poor writing
* inaccurate information,
* inappropriate interest or reading level for students.
Y= The collection has no use for the book; it is irrelevant to the
curriculum or no longer of interest to the student reader.
I hope this helps, Claudia.
