Only a few responses so far, all wanting to know how to do the same thing. Web searching has yielded nothing helpful so I may be asking the impossible. For now I am going to set up a shared user account and we will use that for syncing the iPods. Vista will let you switch users without logging off so you can jump back and forth and my new machine has a quad core processor, a ton of RAM, and lots of disk space so I'm not worried about it slowing down. The biggest deal will be training my wife to use it. She is not a techno-phobe but she likes the computer stuff to be straightforward and we are already dealing with a new operating system and an upgrade to MS Office.
Wish me luck,
Tony

Subject: [CALIBK12] OT: TECH: itunes and vista user accounts
Our home computer gave up the ghost after 7 years of (mostly) faithful
service. I bought a new HP with the Vista 64-bit OS and was able to
salvage all of our files from the old hard drive including the iTunes
library. Since my kids are getting older and wanting to use the
computer more I have set up separate user accounts so I can control how
much damage they do. I want to have all of the accounts access the same
iTunes (v.8) library, including play lists. Following Apple's
instructions, every time one of us adds a CD or play list each
individual user has to import the folder/file in order to see it-- what
a pain. Does anyone know how to set things up so that the library is
truly shared and not just accessible for importing? I know I can set up
a shared account and we can all use that for our iPods but I know we
will inevitably forget to change users before docking and syncing. And
anyway, we should be able to do that on a home computer, darn it!
Thanks,
Tony
