Letter I sent out today (one minute ago) to our Assistant Principals who advise each of the libraries at our 6 high school district - Just thought I'd share.  Hope results work out.

Libraries, General Funds, Cybersafety Legislation Compliance & May 20th Workday

Esteemed FJUHSD APIO's:
Recently Steve Zamora, the Administrative Liaison of the FJUHSD Library Curriculum Committee, approached District Administration about the Library Curriculum Committee's recommendation that a line item be placed at the district level for library book replacement costs.  It was decided at that meeting that this was an issue for each school site APIO to implement among their own general fund budgets.  We understand that in times like these, the budget for book replacement would be "ZERO," but we hope to have that line item in place at each school site so that when funds become available the line item would have some funding.

I am writing this communication to save time and to make sure that this concern is expressed by all Teacher-Librarians of our district.  We have been asked by the district to submit our "vision" for superior library services to increase student academic achievement and while it may be that electronic resources figure highly in that plan, economics may mandate that we continue to replace books that support curricular standards rather than "rent" electronic information.
It is also my understanding that Steve Zamora presented the Teacher-Librarians' plan to implement a Cybersafety/Information Literacy/Ethical Literacy/Social Networking/Cyberbullying Curriculum (see http://lrdc.ocde.us/AB_307___S_1492.htm) to District Administration and that it was also deemed a site issue that we should discuss with our APIO's.  Federal and State Legislation mandate that we teach this at the sites - this is what one of my teaching credentials has prepared me to do!  Although we have much on our plates, Teacher-Librarians can create and teach this curriculum at no cost to the sites nor district.  Complying with state and federal mandates will ensure that the district’s e-rate funding is not in jeopardy.

I am writing this to all APIO's as I hope that ALL STUDENTS have equal access and that the APIO's as a unit decide to both create a general fund site line item funded at ZERO and to allow the Teacher-Librarians to create a plan to cover SB1492 and AB307 legislation concerns as well as do best by our students through teaching to the ESLR's.

I would also like to request that the Teacher-Librarians be allowed to meet again on May 20th of this month in order to create curriculum for our Freshman Library Orientation. In my own case, the library will be closed for IB testing on that day.  The results of our survey on day availability are at http://doodle.com/e6ci3zzgfgu9d9uh

We will be working on our library vision plan and cybersafety curriculum on Tuesday, May 5th at Fullerton Union High School's Library from 7:30am until 3pm.  Please feel free to come by at any time to give any input or guidance.  We will be having a working lunch (salad and potstickers) so it may be optimal to come after 11am for good eats.

Thank you for your time and attention to these three requests.  If you would, please direct your responses to me and copy your site Teacher-Librarian.  (Or direct the response to your site Teacher-Librarian and copy me).  Mr. Scott MacIntyre, please copy Steve Zamora!  :-)  Thanks.

"This is the age of the open-source encyclopedia.  Words like 'research' and 'corroborated' now mean whatever the majority says they mean.  Personally, I'm voting for 'research' to mean 'speculation' and 'corroborated' to mean 'a zesty sour cream-based dip.'"
