This spring I stopped charging library fines for late books (due, in part, to CALIBk12). Lost and damaged books are a very different story and I do perform my due diligence in getting books back. That being said, there have been a few (a very few) books where I did not make students pay. Most of those were related to social services, police involvement, homelessness, and so. However, the rest, to me, were a basic fairness issue. And that's where my professional discretion comes in.
