[CALIBK12] high school library passes =P

Any time class is in session, unaccompanied students must have library
passes and sign in. The passes are designed to allow me to know what
the student is supposed to be doing so I can provide assistance, and
prevent the "wanderers" from having a place to hide from campus
security. During regular class time the pass is filled out by the
teacher with no more than four students per class at a time. (I once had
a teacher send me 20 of his 25 students and thought that was "okay"!)

During tutorial period, a 30 minute period Tuesday-Friday, I generate
the tutorial pass. Students must come in ahead of time to get the pass
and have a reason to be here. Like the rest of the teachers on campus,
during tutorial period I am working with individual students who need
help on research projects as well as help maneuvering through computer
programs.

This is our first year with the tutorial period so we are still working
on the parameters. At the beginning of the year, classroom teachers
tried to send down large groups of students they didn't want to deal
with. At that point, I sat down with my principal and we established
criteria.

does your high school require that students have a pass to be in the
library during break periods?
not lunch so much but, well, fur us it'd a block of time we like to call
recess, i mean tutorial.

what i want to know is how well (or not) does it work?
do you run out of passes?
does no one use the passes?
are the passes forged?
do the teachers not give a crap?
what do the passes themselves say?
does requiring passes create a vibe among the students that the library
is an unwelcoming place and only for the serious book nerds?

your input will make me feel less like sucking my thumb right now.

thank you! =)
