[CALIBK12] California digital textbooks

Hi all.

I must say I've been waiting way too long for this to finally happen,
however, I do have a caveat and it will be controversial.

As we jump on this bandwagon and offer advice and support I'm hoping we
don't see this as another way to become involved in the whole textbook
management bureaucracy. Of course, over the years I've heard it said many
times that textbook management for some of us is a way of hanging on to a
job. I can see how that might be true but I also want to state unequivocally
that I don't think it should be part of our job as teacher librarians.
Textbook management, more than any other add-on which we are sometimes
forced to take on, is a clerical task which we as teachers, should not be
expected to do.

Don't get me wrong. I know there are those of us who have to do this. I've
done it myself. But getting too closely connected to textbooks is not where
we as a profession should be heading.

I look forward to interesting discussions about this whole issue and I also
look forward to hearing ongoing reports about the school Kindle project
which David Loertscher has recently become involved with.

Read, every day, something no one else is reading. Think, every day,
something no one else is thinking. Do, every day, something no one else
would be silly enough to do. It is bad for the mind to be always part of
unanimity.
