BUSINESS DEAN RESIGNS
Bruce Magid, dean of the College of Business, has submitted his
resignation from SJSU effective June 30 of this year. In July, he will
become dean of the International Business School at Brandeis University in
Massachusetts. He will serve as a member of Brandeis' senior
administration and will hold an endowed chair as dean of the school.
During his two years at SJSU, Magid advanced the vision of the College of
Business and shepherded the creation of the Lucas Graduate School of
Business, and the college launched a college-wide undergraduate honors
program, established a study abroad program and successfully achieved
re-accreditation. For more, see

SAN JOSE BLUES WEEK
San Jose Blues Week -- whose sponsors include the Associated Students of
SJSU and the Department of Television, Radio, Film and Theatre -- runs
through Sunday, May 13. Highlights include Chef Ramon's Talking Blues, a
panel discussion on the influence of Chicago blues with live musical
performances on Wednesday, May 9, at the Hal Todd Theatre, and the 27th
Annual Metro Foundation Blues Festival on Saturday, May 12, on SJSU's

MESA GRADUATION
The SJSU MESA Schools Program, which assists academically disadvantaged
students, will hold its annual senior graduation and milestone awards
ceremony at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9, at the San Jose City Hall rotunda.
More than 250 students, parents and community leaders are expected to
participate in the celebration, which recognizes academic success in math
and science. The students will hail from Alum Rock Union Elementary School
District, East Side Union High School District, Sequoia Union High School
District and Gilroy Unified School District. The keynote speaker will be
Teresa Alvarado, executive director of the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon

CSU UPDATE/CFA
The California Faculty Association has announced that its members have
voted to ratify the tentative agreement reached between California State
University and the CFA on Tuesday, April 3. The agreement will go before
the CSU Board of Trustees for approval at its Tuesday, May 15, meeting.
The four-year contract covers budget years 2006-2007 through 2010-2011.

HONORS AND ACCOLADES
Susan Meyers, dean of the College of Education, will be one of 48 women
honored at the YWCA of Silicon Valley's 23rd Annual Tribute to Women
Awards on Thursday, May 10. The program honors women who exemplify
excellence in executive-level positions and the companies who employ them.

Four faculty members will be honored Monday, May 7, at the Dean's Awards
Reception for the College of Applied Sciences and Arts. School of Social
Work Associate Professor Peter Allen Lee will be named outstanding
professor. Janet Johnston, professor of justice studies, will be named
outstanding scholar. Jayne Cohen, professor and director of the School of
Nursing, will be recognized for outstanding service. Billie Jo Grosvenor,
lecturer in the recreation and leisure studies department, will be named
outstanding lecturer.
The sixth annual Provost's Awards for Service Learning was held Thursday,
May 3. Vice Provost William Nance presented the awards. Recipients
included student Kristin Wood, Professor Daryl Canham, Lecturer Michael
Fallon, faculty team Melinda Jackson and Shishir Mathur, the Department of
Sociology, community partner Sunday Friends and, for collaborative
project, the Olinder School Education Project. AmeriCorps Bridging
Borders, Cesar Chavez Community Action, CommUniverCity San Jose, and
Project SHINE were highlighted for service and leadership.
PLEASE NOTE
President Kassing and Provost Carmen Sigler invite all faculty to
participate in this year's commencement ceremony. The day begins with a
free shuttle service from the campus to the stadium at 7:30 a.m., followed
by an appreciation buffet breakfast. At 9 a.m., faculty members will go to
individual college assembly areas to greet and congratulate students as
they assemble to enter the stadium. The shuttle will deliver faculty back
to campus after the ceremony. Regalia is required. Please respond by
